Pre Trip Preparations
Research the plant-based options
Wherever you are going, you have to make sure that they have a culture of staying plant-based, if not then make sure you can arrange that after all its availability! But it’s not that easy to do as you don’t have any lead or you might not have any local connections. That’s why I have some ideas for you, Let’s go
- Use Online resources
- Whenever you are going to a new place, you need solid research on that place. But it’s not that easy to do that as online and offline experiences are totally different. Still, nowadays you can find some plant-based grocery stores or local hotels where you can survive. Try websites like
- HappyCow
- VegGuide
- Vanilla Bean
- Yelp
- Local vegan or vegetarian directories of the countries
- Last but not least Google Maps and Social Media
- Explore local Cuisine
- It can only be understood after you reach that place, but in that case, you might be facing language barriers and sometimes unable to find the perfect food still, the positive side is it can be easily modified according to your needs. You can book hostels or hotels with self-cooking features.
Pack essential plant-based items
When you have the option to solve your problem by yourself, why don’t you make it possible? Bring tools like Portable Blender, reusable water bottles, travel utensil sets, instant oatmeal, and plant-based protein powders. Well let me go deep down into this
- Bring snacks like nuts, seeds
- Bring such snacks which can be used here and there like nuts and seeds and dried foods so you will never run out of food and never ever feel hungry!
- Carry Travel-friendly utensils
- Staying hydrated is important, so carry durable and recyclable water bottles. Look for collapsible or foldable bottles. Refill it when you need it.
- I always prefer to waste less so use reusable travel utensils and a set, mind it should be lightweight and eco-friendly.
- Consider packet-based foods
- Try to use packed base food like oatmeal, Nut Butter, and Protein Powders, and use small-size condiments.
Transportation
Eating at Airports
- Research
- Research your dining option or pre-pack your food whichever suits you! As in international travel, you have to travel for 5+ hours so you have to make your way!
- Dining
- Make a special request for vegan foods. Sometimes they will give you two options which will be beneficial for you!
Plant-based options during transportation
- Prepare snacks
- Pack a variety of plant-based snacks like trail mix, energy bars, veggie chips, or dried fruits to keep you fueled during the trip.
- Make your own sandwiches using whole-grain bread, plant-based spreads like hummus or nut butter, and fillings like sliced veggies, avocado, or plant-based deli slices.
- Consider packing pre-cut fruits and vegetables, such as carrot sticks, cucumber slices, or apple slices, for refreshing and healthy snacking options.
- Explore local markets
- When making stops or layovers during your journey, look for local markets or grocery stores nearby. They often have a selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, and plant-based snacks that you can purchase.
- Visit food vendors or street stalls that offer plant-based options. Look for items like grilled corn on the cob, roasted nuts, fresh fruit smoothies, or local snacks from plant-based ingredients.
- Check if the transportation station or terminal you’re passing through has any food outlets or cafes that offer vegan or vegetarian choices. Many establishments now cater to different dietary preferences.
- Ask locals or transportation staff for recommendations on nearby places to find plant-based food options. They can often provide insights into hidden gems or local eateries that offer suitable choices.
- Don’t hesitate to try local fruits or vegetables you may encounter. It can be fun to experience new flavours and support local agriculture.

- Familiarize yourself with phrases such as “I am vegan/vegetarian” or “Does this dish contain meat, dairy, or eggs?” This will help you communicate your dietary needs effectively.
- Use translation apps or pocket-sized language guides to assist you in learning and pronouncing these phrases correctly.
- preferences
- When entering a restaurant, inform the staff that you follow a plant-based diet. You can say, “I don’t eat meat, dairy, or eggs. Do you have any plant-based options available?”
- Explain your dietary requirements politely and clearly, ensuring the staff understands your restrictions. Feel free to ask questions about specific ingredients or preparation methods.
Choosing plant-based meals at restaurants:
- Ask for vegan
- Inquire if the restaurant has a dedicated vegan or vegetarian menu. Many establishments now offer specific plant-based choices to cater to diverse dietary preferences.
- If there isn’t a dedicated menu, ask the staff for recommendations or if certain dishes can be made without animal products.
- Modify
- Look for dishes on the menu that can be easily modified to be plant-based. For example, ask if they can replace meat or dairy with plant-based alternatives like tofu, tempeh, or vegan cheese.
- Request the removal of non-plant-based ingredients, such as meat, dairy, or eggs, from certain dishes. For instance, you can ask for a pasta dish without cheese or a salad without meat.
